Chanukah 2020

Happy Chanukah! Once again, our community is coming together to find creative ways to celebrate while physically apart with Chanukah giveaways and an online gathering.

Please join us on Monday, December 14 at 5:30 pm for a short online program for the 5th night of Chanukah. Have your menorah at hand so we can light candles together. Register here for the Zoom link.


On Tuesday, December 15, Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia is hosting “A Magical Hanukkah Celebration” from 5:30-6:15. Register here. 

Our Center City Kehillah organizations are also planning a whole range of ways to celebrate throughout the holiday.

Friday, December 4 (pre-holiday)

Chanukah Shabbox with Grad Network and Moishe House RSJ, 4:00-6:00 pm
Do you like Challah *and* Chanukah? This one is for you 🙂 Grad Network and Moishe House RSJ will be giving out special Shabboxes with Chanukah presents in them for grad students and young professionals on Friday, December 4th in Center City and West Philly.

Sunday, December 6 (pre-holiday)

Hanukkah Hangout with Neshama Hadassah, 11:30 am-1:30 pm
Enter our creative corner. We’re happy to have you join our fun craft space! Gather items from around the home or bring new art forms to create your very own DIY Hanukkah decorations! We’ll share our own personal Hanukkah traditions. $5 donation to Hadassah Hospitals in Israel

Edible Menorah with Chef Hat Art Kits, 4:30-5:00 pm
Let’s celebrate Hanukkah together with jkidphilly families in Center City. We will meet on Zoom and decorate our own chef hats with special Hanukkah stamps and stickers (optional), listen to a Hanukkah story and make and enjoy an Edible Menorah! You can register for the Zoom only, or the Zoom with a Chef Hat Art Kit. The kit will contain all the craft materials for your Chef Hat (Pick up in Center City earlier in the day, near Washington Square). Kits are $3 per single child or $5 per family. The first 7 kids who register for the kit will also get a PJ Library Apron. Please register by Friday, December 4th.

Thursday, December 10 (1st night)

Miracle Garden
In the South Philadelphia Shtiebel’s outdoor space over Chanukah, we will be “planting” a Miracle Garden. This will be an inspirational outdoor art installation where individuals and households will be invited to come throughout Chanukah to immerse in theme of “miracles” and engage in our interactive display. One pod will be allowed in the Miracle garden at a time, and time slots need to be reserved. Check back at the link above for other Shtiebel Chanukah events.

Join Rabbi Nathan Kamesar and Hazzan Jessi Roemer from Society Hill Synagogue and Jewish Federation Co-Chair Gayle Norry at the city’s official menorah lighting, including Hanukkah songs and words from Mayor Jim Kenney.

Hanukkah Cook Along, 6:00 pm
Hanukkah is famous for the delicious fried foods we get to eat, but what about learning to cook them yourself? In this special seminar with Jon Hartig of J2 Food, he’ll walk you through making spanikopita-inspired latkes and pumpkin sufganiyot (doughnuts)! When you register for this event, you’ll be sent the ingredients list and a link to the Zoom!

Friday, December 11 (2nd night)

Kabbalat Shabbat service with Chanukah Celebration, 7:30 pm
Congregation Leyv Ha-Ir is celebrating Hanukkah with a special Kabbalat Shabbat service to be led by Rabbi Julie Greenberg and Cantorial Soloist Rena Branson. Come prepared to sing your favorite Hanukkah melodies. Have your Hanukkiah (Hanukkah Menorah) to light, and your kiddush cup and challah to share in the Shabbat celebration. Tot Shabbat with Rodeph Shalom and Musical Artist-in-Residence Isaac Zones, 10:00 am

Joy in Resistance: Kol Tzedek Annual Hanukkah Party, 4:30-6:30 pm
We have learned this year the power of JOY as a form of resistance. Join us for this celebration of light and community! This year our annual Hanukkah party will be a fundraiser for YEAH Philly. It promises to be two hours of fun and games, singing, and candle lighting (on Zoom!). You can see the full schedule in our calendar. Registration link TBA. Join Tribe 12 for another month of Quizzo, aka pub trivia. Do you like pop culture? Jewish fun facts? A rambling host? We’ve got it all! Don’t forget that if your team wins, you will receive a virtual gift card to the restaurant of your choice.

Stories, Songs, and Hanukkah lights with BZBI, 5:30 pm
Join BZBI for a night celebrating our volunteers, lighting Hannukah candles together, and sharing songs and stories of the season.

Stay young at heart with music, menorah lighting, and intergenerational joy featuring our Young Families Group, led by Micah and Joanna Hart. SHS’ Young Families Group programs are geared toward families with children from newborns to 5-year-olds, but children of all ages (including older siblings) are welcome!
