Guided by Jewish values, the Female Hebrew Benevolent Society of Philadelphia has been providing immediate assistance to local, Jewish women in financial crisis since 1819, always upholding the privacy, dignity and self-respect of those we serve.
The Female Hebrew Benevolent Society (FHBS) is the oldest Jewish charitable organization in continuous operation in the United States. It is also the first independent association established by the Jewish community to assist Jews in the City of Philadelphia. Now celebrating our 200th year of service, the all-volunteer board of managers provides assistance in the areas of emergency aid, monthly stipends, pharmacy stipends, personal emergency response systems and camp scholarships. All recipients are assessed and referred by professionals who work with them on an ongoing basis. Less than 1% of our annual operating budget is spent on overhead; the remainder supports our programs for needy Jewish women.
You won’t find us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Our work is focused on Jewish women in need and carried out quickly, quietly and with discretion.
